"Our list of Most Liberal Places in America is based not on opinion polls, which have come under fire in recent elections, but on votes, political contributions and demographics."
A leaked memo from the International Red Cross "reports to the United States government that the American military has intentionally used psychological and sometimes physical coercion 'tantamount to torture' on prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba." In an official press release, the Red Cross refused to confirm or deny the report. Depsite the constant stream of allegations, and despite General Miller's visit to Abu Ghraib to "Gitmoize" the facility (right before the torture there began), reliable, first-hand accounts of torture at Guantanamo Bay have been hard to come by. The Bush administration says that torture is against American policy, even though we could if we wanted to.

"History is written by the winners." or so the saying goes. Some Christian conservative groups believe this includes history as presented at U.S. national parks and monuments. Farewell speeches of departing senators: "I don't leave with the idea that the Senate is not what it used to be in the sense of personnel. We have a way better group of senators. We had five or six drunks when I came here. There is nobody drunk in the United States Senate. We don't have time to be drunk and, more than that, we have the women. We had one woman. An unexpectedly high number of U.S. soldiers injured in the Middle East and Afghanistan (news - web sites) are testing positive for a rare, hard-to-treat blood infection in military hospitals, Army doctors reported on Thursday.
A total of 102 soldiers were found to be infected with the bacteria Acinetobacter baumannii. The infections occurred among soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and three other sites between Jan. 1, 2002, and Aug. 31, 2004.
Although it was not known where the soldiers contracted the infections, the Army said the recent surge highlighted a need to improve infection control in military hospitals.
Eighty-five of the bloodstream infections occurred among soldiers serving in Iraq (news - web sites), the area around Kuwait and Afghanistan, the U.S. Army said in a report published on Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites).
Military hospitals typically see about one case per year.

The Neoconservative Persuasion holds incredible power, but is terribly misunderstood. Beginning amongst the "permanent revolution" of secular, Jewish Trotskyists in the United States, the neoconservative philosophy combines the Machiavellian views of Leo Strauss with the paranoia of Thomas Hobbes to create a ruthless political philosophy that practically worships power. The 1990s saw the true crucible of modern neoconservative thinking, as their concerns were re-framed from those of hardened "Cold Warriors" to the moral obligation to enforce a Pax Americana.

The Spook Revolution is Over. When the Bush administration wanted to go to war with Iraq, the CIA wouldn't tell the neoconservatives what they wanted to hear. So, Rumsfeld relied on his own spy ring instead. When that pretext turned out to be more fiction than fact, the CIA was blamed for gross incompetence. Many agents bristled at that, and so began a clandestine "war" between Bush and the CIA. The Spook Revolution has gone on for a year or more now, in the same way spooks always do such things--quietly. Now, with his "mandate" and "political capital," Bush is cracking down hard with a "purge" of CIA agents "disloyal" to his administration.
National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice will be nominated for Secretary of State to replace Colin Powell, who announced his resignation today. It looks like campaigning for Bush has paid off for Rice.

Why You Lost "It is not a catastrophe nor a sign of man's failure. It is, in fact, an opening for redemption, the necessary setup for an opportunity that we may never get again. I am claiming that this needed to happen, and that if we can understand enough why it needed to happen, then we can reach a level of human development that we have possibly never even thought to know."

Dear Mr. President: In your re-election, God has graciously granted America-though she doesn't deserve it -- a reprieve from the agenda of paganism. You have been given a mandate. We the people expect your voice to be like the clear and certain sound of a trumpet. Because you seek the Lord daily, we who know the Lord will follow that kind of voice eagerly.
Don't equivocate. Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ. Honor the Lord, and He will honor you. -- Dr. Bob Jones III of Bob Jones University. (via Linkfilter.net)

Planned Parenthood is already preparing to provide abortions after Roe v. Wade is overturned. Molly M. Ginty writes about this will be like....
To prepare for what would likely be a health epidemic, they've urged physicians to get special training so they know how to treat infections, uncontrolled bleeding and other life-threatening complications caused by botched abortions.
Now before Congress: The "Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act," that requires doctors to inform women before they have abortions at 20 weeks or later that the fetus may feel pain.
Task force members say that if Roe vs. Wade is overturned, poor and low-income women – who seek 57 percent of the 1 million abortions performed in the United States each year – will be the ones hardest hit. "Women with enough money will be able to find a way to terminate their pregnancies," says Williams. "They will go abroad or find qualified doctors to treat them behind closed doors. But poor women will be exploited. And they will die."
